Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

When to reserve a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:

  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Reserving your vacation home six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. To get the best vacation home within budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • To start, have your group commit to a vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Sound Advice: Soundfront with panoramic views of colorful sunsets. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before booking the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the host's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
