Tricks and tips to get the best rental experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking in Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides have coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
How to choose and book yourrental:
- To start, have your family decide on the best dates and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. The 'L': Located in a quiet private setting. Dock. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property management company before you book the property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
More tips for your visit:
- Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Upon check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
