Tricks and tips to get the very best Ocracoke rental experience:

Get the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. Book your Ocracoke rental home in Fall or Spring months to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Aleta: Pet friendly, waterfront, perfect for two. Private docking. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If not, call the property manager before booking the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges might be applied to your invoice.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your .
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your stay, make note of any problem areas during arrival. Call the rental manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
