Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Booking your rental up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Summer is high season in Ocracoke. To get the most suitable vacation home within budget, we recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- First and foremost, have your family commit to date ranges and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Aleta: Pet friendly, waterfront, perfect for two. Private docking. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before booking your rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
Advice for your stay:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Upon check-out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
