Our top Ocracoke rental booking tips and tricks:
When to go & When to book:
- Summer time is high season in the Ocracoke area. To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guides which often include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Choosing the perfect vacation home in Ocracoke:
- Start by selecting trip dates and a budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. Cabana II: Perfect getaway for two that offers a shared pool has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the host before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is right for your group.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
