Strategies for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines that include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Filter your rental search:
- Start by selecting vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Crows Nest: Dog friendly home, wonderful decking, screened porch. has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the host before reserving the home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or could be applied to your invoice.
- Is your family looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
Some things to know before you go:
- Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
- Record any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Be respectful. Often times, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a excellent stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
