Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation property experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. Book your rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Often, property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines that include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to select the perfect rental in Ocracoke:

  • Start by having your family select the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Sunset on the Sound: Soundfront condo with colorful sunsets. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email the property manager before you book your home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your group.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Upon check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to stimulate new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
