How to book the best Ocracoke rental home experience:

How to get the best value:

  • To get the best value, consider changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • First, have your group choose a vacation week and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. We Still Do: Beautiful home on the canal in Oyster Creek with boat docking. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property management company before you reserve your home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your life at home. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your holiday.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to inspire future reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
