How to find the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring months is a great way to save on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
How to choose the best rental in the Ocracoke area:
- To start, have your group commit to vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Diamond In The Rough: Rooftop Deck
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you love, search for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Tips for your stay:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many difficulties.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
