Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Ocracoke rental home experience:

Find your perfect vacation home:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, , and reduced traffic.
  • Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.

  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Record any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on good feedback to propel more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
