Strategies to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:
Sticking to a rental home budget:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To get the best vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to pick the perfect vacation rental:
- Start by having your group agree to trip dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Sea No Evil: Dog friendly, family friendly, decks, close to the beach. has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the host before you book the property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your agreement.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Considerations for your stay:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent reviews to propel new bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
