Our top Ocracoke rental booking tips and tricks:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring is a great way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked early. Booking your rental property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Owners sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Often, management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guides that include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to select the perfect vacation home in Ocracoke:

  • Start by having your group select a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Sounds Perfect: Located on Pamlico Sound with kayak access has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. If not, email or call the property management company before you reserve your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your group.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home.
  • Document any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental while you're away. Keep your property safe!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a great stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
