Tricks and tips to get the best rental home experience:
Get the most from your vacation rental budget:
- Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- In the Ocracoke area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have discounts for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Filter your rental search:
- Begin by choosing a vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. SeaClusion I: Two-story vacation rental duplex has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available online. If you don't see them listed, call the host before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what is best for your trip.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- During arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
- Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
