Tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring is a great way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines that include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and pick a perfectrental home:

  • Choose a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Morningside: Large Ocracoke home with amazing views from rooftop deck has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking pages. If not, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
