Tricks and tips to get the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • The sooner you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To get the best value, consider changing your family's Ocracoke trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Booking websites usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to choose and book the bestrental:

  • Select a group leader, select your vacation dates, and select a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. Fried Ocra: Pet friendly, marsh and pond views, decks, screened porch has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke attraction you simply love, browse properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking

Advice for a great stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To make certain no damages are linked to your visit, note any problem areas during check in. Make contact with the host right away to report any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
