Strategies to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Get the best rental value:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which will include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Selecting the best vacation home:

  • Choose vacation dates and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Sunsational: Spacious home with saltwater pool has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what is best for your vacation group.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's a certain Ocracoke destination you simply love, browse rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Tips for your stay:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • To make certain that damages aren't linked to your stay, inspect for any problem areas during check in. E-mail the property manager right away to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a terrific vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
