Tips and Tricks to get the perfect vacation property experience:

Get the most from your rental home budget:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your vacation home in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on local accommodations and attractions.

How to pick the best vacation rental in the Ocracoke area:

  • Start by choosing trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Bertha's Cottage: Rec Room l Fenced Yard l Pet Friendly has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is regularly available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before reserving the property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Store the host's information in your smartphone.
  • To make certain that no damages are attributed to your stay, inspect for any problem areas during arrival. Contact the host immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of difficulties.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on great feedback to compel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
