Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summer months are high season in Ocracoke. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

How to pick the perfect rental home in Ocracoke:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and select a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Bertha's Cottage: Rec Room l Fenced Yard l Pet Friendly has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke beach you crave, browse rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.

More tips for your visit:

  • Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on great reviews to inspire new bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
