When to visit & When to book:
- In the Ocracoke area, The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Summer months are high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking in the Fall or Spring is a great way to save on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties.
- Some property management companies offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have coupons for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Planning, selecting, and booking the bestrental home:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Ride About is a relaxing and comfortable island home and offers offsite docking. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If not, contact the property owner before reserving the rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations for your visit:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of difficulties.
- Lock your rental while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- During arrival, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an excellent resource to find the best local spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a excellent vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
