Our top Ocracoke vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guides that include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Filter your search:
- Start by choosing vacation dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Captain Reid's Devereux: Great getaway for two has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before you reserve your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Know before you go:
- Be sure you get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your family vacation.
- Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Property owners rely on good feedback to stimulate more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
