Tips to get the best rental home experience:
Finding the best value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in Ocracoke. To find the largest rental for your budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have offers and deals for local tours and attractions.
Finding the best vacation rental in the Ocracoke area:
- Choose your vacation dates and max budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Cole Bin: Located on a quiet street in Ocracoke has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or could be applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations for your visit:
- Get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of issues.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
- Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on great ratings to propel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
