Tips to get the best vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring months is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Choosing and booking a perfectvacation home:

  • First, have your group choose trip dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. June: Lighthouse view from screened porch, overlooking marsh. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the host before you book the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Keep your property safe!
  • During check-in, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to drive new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
