Rental booking tips and tricks:
Get the most from your budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Reserve your rental home in Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Hosts sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitor guides that include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning and choosing the perfectvacation home:
- Start by having your family agree to trip dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Luxury suite for two with shared docking on Silver Lake. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. If not, call the host before you reserve your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation.
- Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
- If your family is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly rental. Get details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
More tips for your visit:
- Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Document any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
- Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a wonderful time? Many rental managers make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
