Ocracoke rental home booking tips:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Summer time is high season in Ocracoke. To get the best value, consider changing your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Make a plan and pick the right Ocracoke rental:

  • First, have your family select a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Live Oak Cottage: Newly built cottage perfect for two has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before you reserve the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • If there's a certain Ocracoke attraction you love, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or may be applied to your agreement.

Additional considerations:

  • Get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Upon arrival, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great stay? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
