Ocracoke vacation rental tips and tricks:
Cost saving strategies:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. Book your Ocracoke rental in Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Filter your search:
- First, have your group commit to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Olde Ocracoke Church: Light and airy featuring beautiful artist décor. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. If not, email or call the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or applied to your contract.
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
