Tips and Tricks for getting the best rental home experience:
Sticking to a spending plan:
- Book your rental home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked very early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Owners sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, travel guides contain offers and deals for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and pick a perfect Ocracoke rental home:
- First, have your family select vacation dates and a budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Stairway To Heaven: Located near the coffee shop and restaurants has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property manager before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Is your family looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.
Some things to know before you go:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- Upon check-in, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
