Rental booking tips and tricks:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • June, July, and August are high season in Ocracoke. To get the best value, shift your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Booking your rental home six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Some property management companies offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain offers and deals for local tours and attractions.

Finding the best vacation home in Ocracoke:

  • Begin by selecting trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Recently Remodeled-New for 2025-Pet Friendly has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If not, call the property manager before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is best for your trip.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
  • Record any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good feedback to drive future bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
