How to get the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:
When to book a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes.
- Some property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Selecting the perfect vacation home in the Ocracoke area:
- Select a group leader, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. The Cozy Clam is a tastefully decorated cottage with two separate living rooms. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what is right for your vacation.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
- Looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
More tips for your stay:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many difficulties.
- Keep the property locked while you are away! Don't let crooks spoil your holiday.
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- At departure, take a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget any personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
