Strategies for getting the perfect vacation home experience:
Finding the best value:
- The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. To find the largest vacation home for your budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Ocracoke attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Some property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Selecting the perfect rental in the Ocracoke area:
- Start by choosing trip dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. The Cozy Clam is a tastefully decorated cottage with two separate living rooms. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking websites. If not, contact the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or applied to your invoice.
- Looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Some things to know before you go:
- Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on great ratings to drive future bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
