Our top Rental home tips and tricks:

Finding your perfect vacation home:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To get the best value, try changing your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Filter your search:

  • Start by selecting vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. The Lost Puppy: Dog friendly home in Jackson Dunes has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the host before booking the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what is suitable for your group.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or might be applied to your contract.

Tips to have a smooth stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peace. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good feedback to drive new bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
