Tricks and tips to get the best vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked early. Reserving your rental home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
- Summer months are high season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your Ocracoke rental home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Choosing the perfect vacation rental:
- Select a group lead, choose your dates, and select a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. The Lost Puppy: Dog friendly home in Jackson Dunes has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before you reserve the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what is suitable for your vacation family.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
- If there's an individual Ocracoke beach you love, search for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
Tips to have a smooth stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible resource to find the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
