Getting the best vacation property experience:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Book your Ocracoke vacation home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides contain deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Make a plan and choose the right Ocracoke vacation home:

  • Begin by choosing your a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Daydreamer: Reverse floorplan home offering three master bedrooms. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. If not, call the property manager before booking your rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More tips for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many problems.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the property manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an incredible resource to find the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a excellent stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
