Tips for getting the best Ocracoke rental home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, shift your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have offers and deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Make a plan and pick yourvacation home:

  • First, have your family agree to trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Doc's Holiday: Dog friendly, reverse floor plan, well appointed. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. Otherwise, contact the property owner before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or applied to your agreement.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking

More tips for your stay:

  • Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • Upon check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
