Tricks and tips to get the optimal Ocracoke rental experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation rental six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To get the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies usually offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations and attractions.
Selecting and booking the rightrental:
- Start by selecting a vacation week and a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Stranded On Purpose \"Bluebird Day Too\": Spacious dog friendly with a pool table has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available online. If not, email or call the property owner before you book the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Have a fantastic stay:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
- Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if a dispute is filed.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a excellent vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
