Tips for getting the best vacation property experience:

Finding your best deal:

  • To get the best value, try shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines that include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Make a plan and choose yourrental:

  • To start, have your group choose date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Three-bedroom house with views, decks, golf cart and home gym! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. Otherwise, email the host before booking your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what is suitable for your vacation family.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke beach you simply love, search for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or applied to your invoice.

More considerations:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To make certain that no damages are linked to your visit, note any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the rental manager right away to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let thieves spoil your family vacation.
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
