Tricks and tips to get the very best Ocracoke rental experience:

Find your best deal:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. Booking your vacation rental in Spring or Fall is a great way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies usually offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guides that include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by choosing your trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Down Creek Condo 102: Luxurious, reverse floor plan, in the Village. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before booking the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what is suitable for your family.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Upon check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of concerns.
  • Respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental while you're away. Protect your property!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great time? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
