Tricks and tips to get the best vacation rental experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summertime is high season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • The sooner you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

  • Select a group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Su Casa: Spacious home, perfect for large families, private dock. has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. If they are not listed, call the property owner before booking the property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.

  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Get specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge additional pet fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Record any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.

  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to propel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective.
