Rental property booking tips:

When to book & When to go:

  • To get the largest rental home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning and choosing the right Ocracoke rental home:

  • Start by having your group commit to trip dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Sisters: Experience marsh and canal views, great for bird watching. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before booking the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what is suitable for your trip.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you love, search for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To ensure that damages are not attributed to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. text the rental manager immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let crooks spoil your holiday.
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on good reviews to compel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
