Getting the best Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. To book the best rental within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Ocracoke restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Planning and picking the perfectrental home:

  • Begin by selecting your a vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Canel Cottage: Tucked in the trees, nearby kayak launch area. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what is optimal for your trip.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • To make certain damages are not attributed to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the rental manager immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic resource to find the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
