Finding the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To find the best rental within budget, we recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitors guides have coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

Filter your search:

  • First, have your group agree to a vacation week and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. So Dandy: Dog Friendly, convenient to restaurants, coffee shop. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you reserve your rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you long to visit, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

Know before you go:

  • Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's visit, note any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the host right away to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
