Vacation rental tips and tricks:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, try shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Often, property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to choose and book yourrental home:

  • To start, have your family choose trip dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Blind Faith: Beautiful Classic Coastal Design has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. If they are not listed, reach out to the property management company before reserving the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's a certain Ocracoke destination you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Document any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
