Strategies for getting the best vacation property experience:
When to book & When to go:
- The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. To get the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
- Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select vacation dates and spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Teacher's Lair: Beautiful waterfront home on a canal in Oyster Creek has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible online. If you don't see them listed, contact the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or costs applied to your contract.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
Considerations for your stay:
- Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
- To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. text the rental manager immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Upon check-out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Property managers rely on good feedback to compel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
