Tips for getting the best Ocracoke rental experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summer months are high season in Ocracoke. To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Begin by choosing vacation dates and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Fielding's Cottage: Waterfront home, canal views, private dock. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke beach you long to visit, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.

Have a wonderful stay:

  • Add the host's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Record any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a great stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
