Strategies to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Sticking to a spending plan:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. To find the best rental within your budget, we recommend booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Ocracoke restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Planning, selecting, and booking your Ocracoke rental home:

  • Begin by selecting your trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Good Medicine is a canal front home with reverse floor plan and expansive views. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you book the property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • Visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Advice for a fantastic stay:

  • Add the property manager's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Note any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of issues.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to stimulate new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
