Tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. To get the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Ocracoke attractions and restaurants.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Island House: Dog friendly, 3-stop elevator, screen porch, canalfront, boat dock has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking websites. Otherwise, email or call the property manager before you reserve the home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

Have a wonderful stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few concerns.
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let crooks spoil your family vacation.
  • Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to stimulate new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
