Getting the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:
When to visit & When to reserve a rental home:
- Booking in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
How to pick the best rental home:
- First, have your family agree to vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is normally available online. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before you book the rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Take a copy of the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your . We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if a dispute is filed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few concerns.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a great stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
