Tricks and tips to get the optimal Ocracoke rental experience:
Get the best value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- To start, have your group decide on dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before reserving your rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge additional pet fees.
Considerations for your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and places you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
