Our top Vacation rental tips and tricks:

When to book a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. Booking in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have deals for local accommodations and attractions.

Planning, selecting, and booking a perfectrental home:

  • Begin by selecting your potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, contact the property manager before booking your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke beach you simply love, search for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many difficulties.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
