Tips and Tricks to get the best Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Sticking to a rental home budget:

  • To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Filter your rental search:

  • To start, have your family commit to date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property manager before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is best for your group.
  • Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.

During your stay:

  • Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Record any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many problems.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
