Strategies to get the very best Ocracoke vacation home experience:

When to book a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the best value, change your family's Ocracoke vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Often, property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Selecting and booking the right Ocracoke rental home:

  • First, have your group commit to dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Salamander 2 is a lovely soundfront home with boat docking and sunset views. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before you book your rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke destination you long to visit, browse homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain that damages aren't linked to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host right away to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on great reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
