Tips and Tricks to get the perfect vacation property experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, shift your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to pick the perfect vacation home:
- Select a group lead, select your dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Siren Song: Pet-friendly with a fenced yard has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before booking the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- During arrival, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local attractions.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Leave feedback! Property owners rely on good reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
