Strategies to get the best vacation property experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Make a plan and choose the perfectrental:
- Begin by selecting trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Sound Breeze: Contemporary canal front, screened porch, decks. has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible online. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what is right for your vacation group.
- If there's a certain Ocracoke attraction you long to visit, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. .
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges applied to your agreement.
More tips for your stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
- Document any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything on check-out day. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
