Tips for getting the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summer is high season in Ocracoke. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides contain coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Narrow your Search:
- To start, have your family decide on a vacation week and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration you need. The Back House: Quaint two bedroom Ocracoke Island cottage has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what is right for your group.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or applied to your invoice.
More tips for your visit:
- Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- During check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local attractions.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
