Our top Ocracoke vacation rental tips:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To get the largest rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Ocracoke restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides contain deals for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group needs. Hooligan Sunset: Waterfront deck, sunsets, private boat dock. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. If not, email or call the property manager before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish which bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.
  • Does your family require particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

Know before you go:

  • Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your .
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Upon arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
