Tips and Tricks to get the very best Ocracoke vacation property experience:
Get the most from your spending budget:
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, shift your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Some hosts offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Often, management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

- Note any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
