Tips to get the optimal rental home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- In the Ocracoke area, The sooner you can book, the better your selection will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have offers and deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning and choosing your prefect Ocracoke rental home:
- Select a group lead, select your vacation dates, and select a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Out Of The Blue: Soundfront, spectacular sunsets, private boat dock. has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. If not, email or call the host before booking your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is optimal for your vacation.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Know before you go:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
- Make a record of any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
